Group To FG: Release El-Zakzaky, Jalingo, Others Now

After the recent release of Col.Sambo Dasuki and Omoyele Sowore, a coalition of Civil Society Organisations has urged the Federal Government to also release Agba Jalingo, El zakzaky, and over hundreds of illegally detained people nationwide else they would continue mass protest.

The group in a statement on Saturday signed 12 Representatives also expressed concerns over the government’s seemingly concerted efforts at federal and subnational levels towards conscripting the space for civic engagement.

They further warned against abuse and violation of citizens’ rights, flagrant disobedience of court orders and the integrity and independence of the judiciary, as a separate arm of government.

They said the concerns were articulated under two broad issues during the press conference preceding the 23rd December rally: Attack on Judiciary, and on Free Speech and Pattern of Silencing Dissent.

“The release of all illegally detained persons by the Department State Security (DSS) nationwide and obedience to all outstanding court orders must be carried out, or, else the coalition would embark on protest.”

“Equally, Government should constitute an independent panel to investigate the officers who violated protocol and the circumstances that led to the invasion of the court and the re-arrest of Sowore.”

“We strongly condemn the organised attack on the Freedom Rally in Abuja, and call for the investigation and prosecution of those behind disrupting people peacefully exercising their civic rights.”
