A report by the World Bank has revealed that 87 per cent of all the poor people in Nigeria in 2016 were from the north.
The report titled ‘Advancing social protection in a dynamic Nigeria’, released on January 28, 2020, was described as a ‘detailed analysis of the social protection sector’ in Nigeria.
The report added that social protection measures implemented by the government in Nigeria had not been able to address the high level of poverty, and the negative impact of conflicts and natural disasters.
The report observed that Nigeria has a larger proportion of the world’s extreme poor than any other nation despite its rich endowment.
Coincidentally, President Buhari’s North-West region was described as home to almost half of all the poor in the country according to the World Bank report.
